Christopher D. Casscells, M.D.

Dr. Casscells practices general orthopaedics, excluding spine. He specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder and joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee. Dr. Casscells practice is unique for two reasons: his advanced surgical techniques and his devotion to his relationship with his patients. Both are important reasons why Dr. Casscells' patients do so well.

“Minimally Invasive” surgical techniques have been the buzzwords in Orthopaedic surgery for the last five years. Doctors are trying to do operations through smaller incisions or arthroscopically with no incisions at all. As a result, patients have shorter hospital stays and recovery times.

Minimally invasive surgery is nothing new to Dr. Casscells. His father, Dr. Ward Casscells, was one of the first arthroscopists in the United States. Dr. Casscells learned from his father and continues to improve his technique and approach to knee and shoulder arthroscopy. During his residency days at Yale thirty years ago, Dr. Casscells was trained to do an anterior approach to hip replacements which is a hip replacement done through a four inch incision from the front of the hip rather than an a large incision through the buttock or over the side of the hip. He’s done thousands of these operations with great results. Other doctors are just catching up to this "new" approach. With knees, the treatment may be injection therapy, arthroscopic surgery, partial knee replacement, or minimally invasive total knee replacement. With long term expertise in all of these, you can be assured that your treatment will be tailored to you.

Dr. Casscells believes in his patients. He takes the time to listen, examine, answer questions, educate and discuss treatment options and outcomes. Medicine is a partnership and a strong doctor patient relationship improves all aspects of medical care from diagnosis and treatment to rehabilitation.

Dr. Casscells personally takes care of all his patients without the use of physician extenders such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants. He sees you in the office, the hospital, during your hospital stay and follow up. He cares enough to take the extra time to give his patients the best in medical care. For instance, on his joint replacements, he does a plastic surgery closure so that the scar is minimized and the patient can shower right away. This takes extra time in surgery, but makes such a big difference toward a quick, pain-free recovery and nearly invisible scar.

Dr. Casscells’ small office and approach to patient care is unique in today’s world of big medicine. Dr. Casscells wouldn't have it any other way.
